Practice
Message: Date: Thursday, 5 February 2026
Time: 3pm GMT
Tutor: Zuzanna Szozda
Price: £25.00
Platform: Zoom

There will be a 55 minute presentation followed by 15 minutes of discussion.

This presentation will examine the principles, risks and solutions when
considering the use of magnets in the fields of conservation and display by
introducing the fundamentals of magnetic fields in the context of art
conservation and museum practice – how magnetic fields work, how magnets are
used in conservation and display, and how they can be applied safely and
effectively.

A key focus will be the interaction between magnetic fields and art materials.
Based on ongoing PhD research at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, the
presentation will introduce practical methods for the use of magnets in
conservation, with a focus on material sensitivity and conservation safety.

By combining material science with hands-on conservation practice, the
presentation will show how invisible forces can influence delicate surfaces —
and how magnets, when properly understood and controlled, can become
intelligent tools for preservation and display.

Zuzanna Szozda is a graduate of the Faculty of Conservation and Restoration of
Works of Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where she is currently
pursuing a PhD on the use of magnets in conservation and display of artworks.
She also studies at Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste (Academy of Fine Arts) in
Dresden, Germany. She has over 25 years of professional experience in paintings
conservation, complemented by specialist training at international
institutions, including the Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge.
Since 2014 she has been researching the influence of magnetic fields on
materials used in art and on artworks themselves, as well as exploring their
safe and practical applications in conservation. She is the author of numerous
publications, including a monograph Magnets in Conservation, Restauration and
Display of Works of Art, and has presented her research at international
conferences.

HKB Bern, Cabaret Voltaire Zürich, and online
 Message:

Fluxus Fête
<https://activatingfluxus.com/2025/12/09/fluxus-fete-activating-fluxus-grand-finale/>
is a three-day celebration of the radical spirit of Fluxus, marking the
culmination of the research project Activating Fluxus
<https://activatingfluxus.com/>. The project has been supported by a multi-year
grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) <https://www.snf.ch/en>
and hosted at the Bern Academy of the Arts (HKB).

Across multiple formats and locations, the Fête brings together artists,
scholars, and audiences to explore Fluxus's playful, experimental, and
boundary-pushing practices. The program combines lectures, panels, and
discussions that critically engage with Fluxus's history, philosophy, ongoing
influence, and afterlife, alongside performances that activate scores and
reinterpret Fluxus and Fluxus-inspired works.

Highlights include a study day dedicated to Ay-O's Finger Boxes, co-organized
with the Getty Research Institute; an international symposium, Activations,
<https://activatingfluxus.com/activations-a-fluxus-symposium-friday-february-27-12-7-pm-cet/>
featuring speakers from around the world, including presentations by members
of the Activating Fluxus research team; and a final day at Cabaret Voltaire
<https://www.cabaretvoltaire.ch/> devoted to artistic enactments, readings, and
an exhibition of scores.

Fluxus Fête offers space and time for reflection and experimentation, as well
as opportunities for convivial exchange between specialists and non-specialists
alike-and all those curious about Fluxus.

 Message:
ASTM Committees C01 (Cement), C07 (Lime and Limestone), and C15 (Masonry) are
pleased to host our 2026 Masonry Symposium.  The theme for this gathering is
Advancing Masonry Technology and Tradecraft. We have worked over the past few
years to assemble a group of papers exploring topics of masonry materials,
design, specification, maintenance, and rehabilitation with an intentional
focus on praxis. The symposium will be held in-person only on June 2, 2025 at
the Hyatt Regency Dallas in Dallas ,TX.  You do not need to be a member of ASTM
to attend the symposium, all are welcome and encouraged to attend.

The technical program, which includes a list of papers and presenters, and
details on the data and venue are now available on the symposium website.
Registration will open near the end of March.  0.7 CEU certificates are
available for those who attend the entire day.

A special thanks goes out from those of us on the symposium organization
committee to those from the AIC community who volunteered to help us as peer
reviewers for the papers being presented. Opportunities to act as a review are
still available by contacting Bill Kjorlien
([email protected] <[email protected]>).
Peer reviewed papers from the presentation topics will be published in a
symposium journal a few months after the actual presentations.

Please see the attached program and link to the symposium website for more
information.
