Subject: "Learning to Look" workshops in conjunction with the February 2026
annual meeting of the CAA
Message: Each year since 2002, the American Institute for Conservation has
organized "Learning to Look" workshops in conjunction with the annual meeting
of the College Art Association. The workshops, which are held offsite in a
museum in the meeting's host city, bring together art historians, curators,
artists, and conservators for a focused study of the material properties of one
group or type of objects in the physical presence of those objects.

2026 marks the sixth year that curators and conservators from the Art Institute
of Chicago will lead workshops. There will be two workshops:

In the Conservation Studio with the Dutch and Flemish 17th-Century Collection
Catalogue, led by Jacquelyn N. Coutré , Eleanor Wood Prince Curator; Annie
Correll, Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Curatorial Fellow; and Gerrit Albertson,
Associate Paintings Conservator. Thursday February 19, 2026 from 12:30- 2:00pm.

Claire Ziesler's Forms From Fiber,  led by Melinda Watt, Chair and Christa C.
Mayer Thurman Curtor of Textiles; Isaac Facio, Associate Textiles Conservator;
and Megan Creamer, Assistant Textiles conservator. Friday, February 20, 2026
from 12:30pm- 2:00pm

Registration for each workshop is limited to 12 people. One does not have to be
registered for the CAA meeting to participate in a workshop. To register,
please contact Rebecca Rushfield at [email protected] and specify in which
workshop you wish to participate.

Subject: Reconditioning APS Silica Gel Sachets
 Message:
Hello all,

I am hoping to recondition some Art Preservation Services brand silica gel
sachets. Ideally, I would like to perform reconditioning via heat application.
However, I have not been able to source a calibration chart for this brand/type
of sachet.

Does anyone have a calibration chart they could share with me, that associates
sachet weights to RH ranges? Also interested if anyone has any tips and tricks
they could share about reconditioning silica sachets, particularly via heat
application.

Thanks in advance for any advice and information!

post-graduate fellows to be part of the lab staff this summer.

Each internship will be supervised by the senior conservator of the appropriate
specialty.

Subject: Pastel Portrait Painting's Artist/ Provenance - Input Needed
 Message:
Dear colleagues,

I treated a pastel painting with mold and would like to have information
about the artist. It's a portrait of a "Young Lady" executed on laid blue paper
support lined onto a linen canvas attached to a wooden strainer. The pastel was
under a glass and inside in an ornate gilded frame in very bad condition. Both
the artwork and the frame were stabilized to protect it from further damages.
This painting belongs to a private client who inherited this object without its
proper provenance. It's likely that the artwork was purchased in Paris, France
and then brought to the US.

There is a wooden backing board on the reverse of the frame and has an
inscription that it's not legible. There are only fragments, this laid paper
support is very fragile and in poor condition. Am not certain if this painting
is from the (early) 18th century or is in a 19th century French Rococo revival
style or something else.

Attached find several images for your review. From examining the backs and
bottoms of countless works of art, I would argue that the most common
preservation mistake artists make is not properly marking their work. Every
piece should have the artist's name, the title of the artwork, the date,
signature and the place of creation clearly printed (somewhere on it) in block
letters.

I contacted Dr. Thea Burns, Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of
Art History and Art Conservation Program, Queen's University, in Kingston,
Canada. Thea has researched extensively on pastels, blue paper and other topics
and was very helpful in addressing the possible ways to identify the artist and
dating. She encouraged me to contact Neil Jeffares in England to inquire about
this pastel and introduced me to this wonderful resource/ website.

Hope that you might recognize the artist and possibly find other artworks by
this same artist, such as drawings and oil paintings of a woman with a turban
or an Odalisque - "L'Odalisque" commonly seen in French Rococo style. The
pastel painting is very delicate and beautiful thus deserving this
stabilization treatment. It was framed without the original wooden backing
board (verso) after treatment to prevent further fungal attack.

Please, I'd greatly appreciate any further information and guidance.

Many thanks in advance for your time and kind attention.
