Artworks Conservation Ltd, established in 2004, is seeking a qualified Paper 
Conservator to join our team at The Chapel, Markington Hall, Markington, near 
Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG3 3PQ, United Kingdom. Our studio is busy and 
well-equipped, providing services for museums, galleries, institutions, art 
dealers, and private collectors throughout the UK. We specialise in the 
conservation, mounting, and framing of a broad range of traditional and 
contemporary artworks as well as archival material, with particular expertise 
in prints, drawings, and watercolours. The studio is spacious and conveniently 
located a short bus journey and/or drive from Harrogate, a vibrant spa town in 
North Yorkshire with excellent connections to Leeds and York, and close to the 
Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks.

Reporting to



Senior Paper Conservator





Location



Paper conservation studio at The Chapel, Markington Hall; occasionally, on-site 
at museums, galleries and historic properties. Candidate should be prepared to 
work on-site for occasional periods or two or more days with overnight 
accommodation provided.





Salary



£30,389 (full-time)





Holiday



21 days p.a. (pro rata) plus 8 bank holidays 





Training



A relevant postgraduate, or equivalent level, conservation qualification and, 
ideally, at least 2 years' relevant experience.





Overall Objective



·       To assist with and undertake conservation / restoration treatments for 
works of art and archives on paper





Main activities



·       Practical conservation treatments for Western and Eastern art including 
watercolours, prints and drawings, folding screens, scrolls, archival material, 
photographic material and vellum. Additional training will be given as necessary

·       Mounting of artworks and fitting into frames

·       Preventive rehousing of artworks and archival material

·       Condition reports, treatment record-keeping, photographic recording of 
treatments

·       Undertaking on-site condition surveys and remedial conservation 
treatments at museums and galleries as required

·       Maintaining health and safety standards

·       Helping to keep all areas of the studio clean and tidy





Person specification – Essential



·       Postgraduate-level conservation qualification with specialism in paper 
conservation

·       Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·       Computer and online skills (e.g. MS Office, Excel, social media) 

·       Ability to work Monday to Friday

·       Maintaining a high working standard whilst adhering to and managing 
multiple deadlines 





Person specification – Desirable



·       UK driving licence

·       Previous conservation experience, ability to work independently with 
assistance as required. 

·       Conservation mounting and framing experience

 Image Permanence Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology  
   This position is the Image Permanence Institute's (IPI) second 2-year 
Fellowship funded by a Getty Global Art  & Sustainability Fellows

grant. The application review process will begin May 13, 2026.  Fellows in 
these 2-year positions contribute to generating new resources and professional 
development opportunities that help encourage and enable more institutions to 
implement sustainable preservation practices. For this Fellowship, we are 
seeking applications  from candidates with an educational background in 
mechanical engineering, building physics, data science, preservation science, 
or related field. Applicants must also demonstrate an interest in preservation 
science and cultural heritage preservation. The goal  is to identify a Fellow 
with engineering skills who is interested in pursuing research on topics such 
as energy monitoring, the role collection materials can have on temperature and 
relative
 humidity management, or energy saving strategies/materials that have  proved 
successful in other fields, but not yet tested or evaluated for collection 
environments; or similar topics.
