Message: As the 60th anniversary of the Florence Flood will be commemorated in November 2026, it is a good time to reflect on what that catastrophe means for conservators today, many of whom were not alive when it occurred. For conservators who were pre-teens or teenagers at the time of the flood, stories of the post flood rescue operations were often what sparked their interest in conservation. For conservators working at the time of the flood, new methodologies developed to deal with an overwhelming number of items requiring immediate treatment, brought about a radical shift in thinking about treatment. It is almost 60 years after the Florence Flood. Most of the people active in conservation today have no personal memories of that event and take for granted the once radical treatment approaches. What, if anything, does the Florence Flood mean to young conservators today? For a presentation on the Florence Flood and memory, I would be interested in hearing from conservators under the age of 40 on how they view the Florence Flood and its relevance for their work and career. Materiality, Innovation and Failure Phenomena (c. 1890–1930)" Message: The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries witnessed profound transformations in artists' materials and studio practice. The industriali-sation of paint production, the commercial availability of pre-prepared canvases, the introduction of new synthetic pigments, and evolving binding media formulations radically reshaped pictorial practice. Within this context, artists such as Hermen Anglada-Camarasa and Pablo Picasso -and their contemporaries-, engaged with new material possibili-ties that profoundly influenced both aesthetic outcomes and long-term material stability. This two-day international symposium invites contributions that examine the materiality, technical construction, degradation phenomena, and con-servation challenges of paintings produced between approximately 1890 and 1930. The event aims to foster dialogue between conservation scientists, conservator-restorers, technical art historians, curators, and heritage scientists working in major museum collections and research institutions. The event will explore the material turn in early modern painting, focusing on: • Industrial innovation (oil paint tubes, new pigments, binding media, additives, etc.) • Experimental studio practice • Material instability and conservation challenges • Technical art history as a bridge between archival research, scientific evidence, and conservation practice CALL FOR ABSTRACTS Format We invite proposals for 20-minute case-study presentations Interdisciplinary and cross-institutional proposals are particularly encouraged.
