Thinking all dances are 32 bars might be less of a problem in the UK since clubs programme a mixture, not just contra. Different styles, varying lengths

Hi all, I call David Kaynor's Shutesbury Reel pretty often. One thing I've noticed about calling a 48 bar dance is the fact that the dancers seem to be "pre-programed' to "go back to the beginning" after 32 bars (or at least programmed not to have to remember any more than the AABB). This makes it hard to let go of calling after a couple times through, even with an experienced group of dancers. Actually the same is true for Cherokee Shuffle which is only 36 bars and I am quite sure for any dance that is not 4 x 8 measures AABB. I actually think it's good to challenge experienced dancers this way,.. but be prepared! bill From: Graham Knight via Contra Callers <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, July 31, 2023 3:09 PM To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Cc: Joseph Erhard-Hudson <[email protected]> Subject: [Callers] Re: AABBCC contras? I’m curious about duple minor contra sequences that are written for 3-part AABBCC tunes. Can anyone share or point me to any such dances? My question is partly inspired by Gene Hubert’s Fan In The Doorway, written for three part *slip* jigs. I’m pretty sure I’ve run across sequences written for AABCC tunes (no repeat on the B). I might even have spotted some 4–face-4’s written for full 3-part tunes on ibiblio (the database seems to be down as I write this so I can’t confirm). But so far I’m coming up empty for AABBCC duple minors. If you’ve got anything I’d be much obliged. -Joseph Erhard-Hudson _______________________________________________ Contra Callers mailing list -- [email protected] To unsubscribe send an email to [email protected] _______________________________________________ Contra Callers mailing list -- [email protected] To unsubscribe send an email to [email protected] _______________________________________________ Contra Callers mailing list -- [email protected] To unsubscribe send an email to [email protected]
