I understand the way you see it except that SME philosophy is keep it simple. 

An example of this is the php version we use. Centos default is not php53. Our
is. And we renamed all the php53 package we use into php. This way is simple to
maintain for us. And we are still able to install php53 compat rpm from other
repo for dependancies we have not built. 

Another point is that we keep it simple for user. Yum install
smeserver-virtualbox will install what it needs. And the wiki will explain it. 
The day you see that the next version is compatible you just change the
requirement and everybody can be migrated to the new one. 

Usually this kind of playing with names is intended to allow you to install
multiple versions of the same program. I can understand that for a language
program: peel, php, ruby, python... Or even with asterisk which can be used
through multiple pieces of softwares.   But what is the point of running
multiple versions of a virtualization software on one host ? Reducing
performance ?
