I saw such behaviour sometimes with some providers..
apparently, pop3 connection is dropped on remote side after a timeout.. this
means that there's no way to download any message and fetchmail won't ever
complete its task.
moreover, I saw that sometimes the issue is caused by malformed email; even
with the isp's webmail or via mail client I was't able to open the problematic
email and I finished simply deleting it/them
