I have commented out the line
crl-verify pub/cacrl.pem
in the server config file and restarted openvpn. The clients can now connect.
The issue looks therefore related to the CRL file.
This looks to have correct dates ('Next Update' is in the future), however I
still suspect it was encoded in an algorithm now obsolete.
