Exposing SMB over the internet is a seriously bad move.
It is not inefficient, and we won't talk about the security implications of
using it.

So you are happy for anyone to just come up and drop whatever files they like
on your server? With no permission, no authentication, nothing?
It is extremely dangerous and I can't imagine any developer here supporting it.
I would recommend you use something both suited to the job (WebDav, SSHFS, or
applications like NextCloud etc) and secure it with proper authentication.
I am closing this won't fix as I can't see us ever doing this.
