Hello everyone,
I'm trying to set up the cooker-firewall (or is it Mandrake security?)
as my home LAN gateway/firewall. The main reason I want to use it
rather than other firewalls is that it comes with squid / squidguard
so I'd like to try and keep my kids safe.
Hardware:
Intel P200MMX
64MB RAM
1.7GB HDD
PCI NE2k compatible net card 192.168.0.254
PCI ISDN card (Asuscom ISDNLink)
i586 iso image downloaded 5 days ago.
Problems:
During installation I've been leaving the LAN Gateway and DNS server
settings blank and I also leave the "yellow pages" box unchecked. Is
this correct? I don't have a DNS server running anywhere on my LAN.
I also leave the proxy settings blank. I know a DNS cache isn't
enabled by default for security reasons.
After installation I can log in to the firewall via a web browser and
succesfully configure my ISDN connection then reboot (just to be sure
it all starts up ok). When I request a web page, or any other net
traffic the firewall dials and connects to my ISP ok. From the
firewall, I can ping my ISP by IP address only and not by name eg.
www.myisp.com otherwise I get "unable to resolve hostname" (I think)
I'm dual booting with Smoothwall (which runs a DNS cache) and I've had
no problems.
Many thanks for any help anyone can give me.
Norrie

PS. I like the interface very much. Is the a newer release planned?
