I've had some really wacky experiences with SMC cards
in my boxes, and tend to stay away from them.  I seem to
have much better luck with Intel and 3COM cards.  YMMV.

One thing you might try.  I've found that when sticking
two 3COM cards in a box, I've had to sometimes run the
3COM configuration utility and have it re-auto-configure
both cards, even if I'm sure they aren't conflicting.
It's a pain, having to dig out a DOS boot disk and run
the program, but it's made cards work in the past that
just didn't want to run and solved all kinds of wierd
problems.  Might want to give it a shot. =)
