Thanks Dippy,

The modem problem with this kernel is to be expected - it's only a bare
kernel, no modules for serial IO or PPP.  Sounds like we may have a
winner, so I'll go ahead and build the whole thing (actaully build was
running last night - hoping this would be the case).
