I cc'd the list as the return on this was different than normal.
By "clock" are referring to the mouse cursor?
At that point the installer should be trying to insert the following
modules:
"mace" => "Apple PowerMac Ethernet",
"bmac" => "Apple G3 Ethernet",
"gmac" => "Apple G4/iBook Ethernet",
On my 1999 Powerbook, it's bmac. Are you able to switch to one of the
other VT's to see the output? You should see references to insmod, with
the above modules. Since you can still move the mouse, it doesn't sound
like the machine is frozen.
A test you could do, so you don't have to go through the whole install:
Instead of CDROM, choose ftp or NFS or HTTP install. You will be prompted
as to which module to install for networking. Try the above, starting
with bmac and see if it loads OK. You might try the others too, and see
if for some reason loading one of them locks up the machine.
It is possible to bypass the network detection by pressing "Cancel", and
set it up manually later. Or turn off the autodetection. Not sure why
this particular machine should be problematic, as I know my 1999 has no
problems, and we have folks who have set it up on TiBooks and iBooks too.
