Well, I'm not what we could call an expert but I'm working with Linux for
near two (2) years (on my mac with Linux PPC 2000 and on my PC with Red hat
6.1 and recently Mandrake 8.0) and since using mandrake I'm really enjoy
using my PC. That's why I download the PPC beta for my iMac 333 with 96Mb
ram, 6 Gb HD with 4.7 Gb (HFS+) allowed to my Mac OS 9.1 and Mac OS X
(10.0.4) and 1 Gb (linux partition for " \ ") 192 Mb (Swap) and 1 Mb
(bootstrap). I'm downloaded the ISO and burn it on a PC with NERO max. I
booted on BETA1 CD and even with whatever driver I used for installation, I
noticed Video problem and the best I could get was using no-video. Because
I'm french canadian I tried to install in french but noticed the language
problem, I found your notice later :-) so I finish the installtion with an
error telling me that my bootstrap is not HFS (Probably I did not
initialize it my bootstrap partiton) Anyway, I'm went back to beginning and
proceed again but this time with English (US) as the primary language, then
proceed with the initialisation of my bootstrap partition. I notice
something strange during my second installation, because I used
install-atyfb for my first installation, for the second I used no-video,
and during process at the end I could not initialise XFree because none of
the component proposed for my iMac was working so I used Xpmac and proceed
with the reboot process, went to Open Firmware (O-F) then proceed with the
Bootstrap iniatilisation as mention at the end of the installation and also
in documentation on the Beta1 CD. I noticed again something strange, tell
me if I'm wrong but in documentation it says "setenv boot-device
hd,X:\\:tbxi" and at the end of installation it says "setenv boot-device
hd:X,\\:tbxi" notice the difference...
in my case X is meaning 7 or hd7.
So I used the second one (installation one), the bootstrap in working well
it boot my Mac OS as commanded or automatically, boot on CD, go in O-F, but
now I'm stuck with the screen "Welcome to Linux Mandrake 8" on top and a
message "Booting..."
and nothing append. I dont know if it's because the bootstrap (I dont thing
so) or because I used Xpmac instead of Xfree 4.0.X.
This where I am now, any tips how I could use rescue on BETA1 CD and only
reinstall or reconfigure XFree.
