Hi there.  I'm short of time right now (have to get to the Farmer's Market early :)) - but later today, I can sit down and work through this again - I'll be on ICQ again and we can go at it from there.  If that sounds good, let me know.

I have been gone for awhile again. Brice you were trying to help me with the
sound when I had to take off. I hope you have some more ideas.

I ended up reinstalling mandrake as I botched trying to upgrade X and
couldn't get it to run again so I am starting from scratch. I installed the
arts packages and the alsa packages.

Here is my lsmod:

Module Size Used by
ppp_deflate 44000 0 (autoclean)
bsd_comp 4768 0 (autoclean)
ppp_async 8464 1 (autoclean)
ppp_generic 23072 3 (autoclean) [ppp_deflate bsd_comp ppp_async]
macserial 38256 2 (autoclean)
snd-pcm-oss 45392 0 (autoclean) (unused)
snd-pcm 59488 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-timer 11888 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm]
snd-mixer-oss 110! 56 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss]
snd 29776 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-pcm snd-timer
snd-mixer-oss]
soundcore 4880 0 [snd]
supermount 39072 4 (autoclean)

Here is my modules.conf:
pre-install pcmcia_core CARDMGR_OPTS=-f /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias eth0 gmac
alias usb-interface0 usb-ohci
alias serial macserial
# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
# ALSA portion
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-awacs
# OSS/Free portion
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
# OSS/Free portion - card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

Hope you can help me out with this. I type amixer and get:
amixer: Mixer attach hw:0 error: No such file or directory

Here is another error message I generate:
[root@localhost dippy]# service alsa restart
Doing alsactl to store mixer settings... [ OK ]
Shutting down ALSA sound driver (version 0.5.11): [ OK ]
Starting ALSA version 0.5.11:insmod: /lib/modules/2.4.4-6.2mdk/alsa/snd.o: No
such file or directory
insmod: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.4-6.2mdk/alsa/snd.o failed
awacs 0. [ OK ]
Doing alsactl to restore mixer settings... [ OK ]

I tried the dmasound package that Stew put up. I got static after I ran that
so I reverted back.

Hi Dippy,

The relevant portion of my lsmod listing is:

snd-seq-oss
snd-seq-midi-event
snd-seq
snd-seq-device
snd-pcm-oss
snd-pcm-plugin
snd-mixer-oss
snd-card-awacs
snd-mixer
snd-pcm
snd-timer
snd
soundcore

From here - you can see that you're missing alot of the alsa modules -
snd-card-awacs, snd-mixer (this is why you can't use amixer),
snd-pcm-plugin, snd-seq, snd-seq-device, snd-seq-midi-event,
snd-seq-oss. I'm not entirely sure why these modules aren't loading for
you ... you might want to check and see that (a) you have them and (b)
that the versions of alsa/aRts you have match what I had listed (I'll
list again for convenience):

libarts2-devel-2.1.2-2mdk
arts-2.1.2-2mdk
libarts2-2.1.2-2mdk
alsa-lib-devel-0.5.10-2mdk
alsa-utils-0.5.10-2mdk
alsa-lib-0.5.10-2mdk

Also - what kernel are you running? I'm running Stew's 2.4.4-6.2mdkkernel (if you don't have this one, grab it from
ftp://speakeasy.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake-devel/cooker/ppc/Mandrake/RPMS/

Let me know what's going on! ;) We'll get this working yet! Btw - my
ICQ# is 710189, if I'm on, feel free to message me and we can go at this
interactively.

I think I am making progress. Stew was trying to help me on ICQ earlier
today. I was getting a bunch of unresolved symbols in the alsa modules
during boot. Installing the libarts and arts rpms took care of all of
that. I was trying to look at the alsa web site for help. I still do not
have sound. I saw where the default is mute. I typed amixer as they
describe but I get: [root@localhost dippy]# amixer
amixer: Mixer attach hw:0 error: No such file or directory

When I check my modules with lsmod I get:
[root@localhost dippy]# lsmod

soundcore 4880 0 [snd]
supermount 39072 4 (autoclean)

Here is my /etc/modules.conf:

pre-install pcmcia_core CARDMGR_OPTS=-f /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
# alias sound-slot-0 dmasound_awacs
alias eth0 gmac
alias usb-interface0 usb-ohci
alias serial macserial

alias char-major-14 soundcore
# ALSA portion

alias sound-service-0-0 ! snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

I don't know if any of this helps. I am just trying to give any info that
would be helpful. Let me know what you think.

Hi Dippy,

No - I don't believe I did. I don't think I had any sound whatsoever.
As far as alsa & aRts goes, the following RPMs are installed here:

libarts2-devel-2.1.2-2mdk
arts-2.1.2-2mdk
libarts2-2.1.2-2mdk
alsa-lib-devel-0.5.10-2mdk
alsa-utils-0.5.10-2mdk
alsa-lib-0.5.10-2mdk

Probably anything w/ -devel you won't need (then again, maybe you will
if you need to recompile any sound apps ;). And as for XMMS - the
version on the CD is BAD ... get Stew's recompile from the mirrors
(should be in Mandrake-devel/cooker/ppc/Mandrake/RPMS/ - just look for a
version more recent than yours.

See if that gets you going. If not - write back. Seeing as that I have
the exact same machine you do (assuming your's is a 400MHz iMac DV) -
I'm sure we can get this figured out ;)

I will try adding that. I assume I need to download the alsa drivers
first and install them. Just curious. did you have the static problems
at the beginning in kde and absence of any other sounds.

Hi Dippy,

I also have an iMac DV and I've gotten sound to work fine. I'll write
more in a bit (I'm on my way out to dinner) - but basically, I'm using
the aRts and alsa systems. I have the following lines in my
/etc/modules.conf:

# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
# ALSA portion
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-awacs
# OSS/Free portion
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
# OSS/Free portion - card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

Get that in there and see if that gets you going. If not - wait for my
next installment ;)

I thought since it had been awhile since it was first brought up, I
would bring it up again. I have no sound at all on my Imac DV. If
starting up with the KDE desktop I get a really annoying blast of
static. If I use gnome there is nothing. I get no system sounds at
all.
