The key to making the HP work was simply recompile the kernel, hacking 
printer.c a little.
Sadly, I couldn't get the modules to compile in Mandrake.
The other possibility was to use HP's printing utility suite (on sourceforge).
But there are no ppc binaries or rpms there.
Also, one could simply compile the hpoj driver and tools.
These too would not compile for me on Mandrake.

So, to see if I could make it work, I installed Yellow Dog 2.
I immediately hacked the printer.c and rebuilt the kernel.
I used lpr and printtool to set things up.
I chose the Postscript driver.
And it worked immediately.

Before I hacked printer.c and rolled my own kernel, the
response was exactly the same as in Mandrake--absolutely
nothing--no reponse at all from the printer.

So if any of you HP Laserjet 1200S folks need to get it working
in Mandrake, I would suggest simply trying to recompile the kernel
with the printer.c hack that I emailed the list earlier about.

And if someone can tell me why I kept getting a failure in my 
make modules
command, using Mandrake RC, I would be happy to try to
reinstall Mandrake and give it another whirl.

I have to say, though, that Mandrake seems considerably slower.
I'm using 2.2.19 and it is going a lot faster than the 2.4 kernel in the RC.
But I suppose that's to be expected in a new release.
I also am quite sure that some of it has to do with the fact
that I was using xpmac (by force, not by choice--the installer woulsn't
let me select Xfree4) which doesn't have any acceleration.
