Aha!  Ok, did the above but it still doesn't work.  What does work is:

CTRL-APPLE-DELETE

Also, to switch to a vc, using CTRL-APPLE-F1 does the trick.
Unfortunately, when switching from a vc back to X, it seems to lock up
and I need to send the X server a HUP to get it to come back up (but
this is with the mac X server... still need to figure out how to make
it use xfree86).
