That option is normally used for things like IRQ, etc. Does the 2nd stage install come up? Did you try both kernels? Short of that, I'd try a network install, from the Linux PC. When you're reading it in MacOS, I assume you're just browsing the directories, rather than reading the data. It could just be a marginal combination of media and CD Drive.
