No it's not a lame copout. The DHCP clients work for everyone *BUT* you (I'd say Airport users but I don't recall anyone else having this issue). These are the same daemons that x86 uses. So if there's a problem with them it would have been discovered by now. I believe that you're having the problem. I always setup my ethernet interface and my airport interface. Both fail the first time since: a) I don't plug in my ethernet interface at home, but I leave it turned on at boot. b) My airport (as you've already complained about) doesn't have the ESSID and the key set, so it can't get an address. Despite both of these interfaces failing to get a DHCP address I'm still unable to replicate your problem. And a rather large one at that. As far as your offer to buy him an Airport that's great.
