It's a valid question, but yes I am...at least I think I am. By free space
you mean a partition of type 'Unallocated'.
After realizing that the device entry was being created in /dev I just
made the whole disk unallocated, booted the mdk CD and checked to see if
the device was there. And I have yet to be able to get it to create that
device.
My machine has nothing on it right now, so I'm open to suggestions on
things to try to diagnose this a little more. Maybe my pain can make it
easier on somebody else someday. :)
