There should be no difference in how you edit those files. As long as you have the pine package installed you'll have pico. You can choose not to start X by default on boot in the installer or if it's already installed you can at the boot prompt instead of just say entering: linux enter: linux 3 That will put you in boot you into boot level 3 which won't start X. Then you can edit the XF86Config-4 file.
