Yes, you're in the right place. The 8500 isn't one of the easier machines
to get going with, especially if the whole Mac thing is new to you. Can
you outline some of the specific issues you're having?

This is good news!
Here are the specs on my 8500:
Power PC 8500
604e CPU @ 200 Mhz
96 MB Ram
2 GB SCSI Hard drive
9 GB SCSI Hard drive
8 MB ATI Rage Pro 3D PCI Video card
2 port USB card
8X SCSI CDROM
Floppy
Here's a run down of my install:
1) Running the "Mandrake linux Install" that uses the scripting does not work for me. So I moved on to the manual install. I'm even using an english install.
2) I am running OS 8.6 on the 2 GB drive and am trying to install Linux on the 9 GB dirve
3) I've copied over the BootX folder from the CD to the desktop and unpacked the Install.sit
4) I start the BootX aplication and choose "options" > "specified RAM Disk" > all.gz". Change the Ramdisk size to 34000 and click on the LINUX button
5) The install starts and choose mesh.o for the driver to access the CD ROM and I'm into the graphical install where I select the "recommended" install
6) At DrakX Partitioning I select custom. It displays sda and sdb. I choose sdb (9gb drive) and do an auto allocate. It sets up "/", "swap", and "/home".
7) Durning the formatting of the partitions I note it has formated sdb5 and sdb7
8) I take the defaults for package selection and the install begins
9) After the install finishes I copy the BootX App, BootX Extension and the Linux Kernels folder to my System folder.
10) I restart my Mac and I'm greeted with BootX. The only option I plug into BootX is sdb5 for the Root device
11) I then click on the Linux button to boot into linux
12) I recived a message that states
"VFS: Cannot open root device "sdb5" or 08:15"
"Please append a correct "root=" boot option"
"Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:15"
"Rebooting in 180 seconds.."
There you have it.
