be comforted by the fact that i had ALL these problems and got it all (WELL MOST OF IT) going without using a text editor.
here's what goes wrong -
if you do a reccommended graphic install and allow the system to be set to auto start X when you get to the X login your mouse doesn't work and the key map is all wrong. this makes it VERY difficult to do much.
do this -
use all the defaults for a reccomended install if possible or if you MUST go expert use mouse defaults AND mouse 3-button emulation defaults.
right at the end of the graphic install don't use xpmac driver for X use the other one (freeX86?). when it says "Congratulations - its all installed" GO BACK to the last step (X configuration) in the checklist on the left select the left hand option (not xpmac) and when asked if you want to start X automatically say NO!
when you boot up you don't get the groovy kde login - you are still in a consol and need to login (as root first time i would think) and >startx. it all (X) starts up (i've only ever used KDE as a window manager) WITH a mouse and keyboard that work and even with 3button emu on F11, F12.
watch out for using the mandrake software manager without a mandrake CD in the drive - least ye die!

Until now, I succeeded. I did a text install with a 2.4 kernel on a PM 7600.
In the beginning it didn't work because I did a graphics install. I saw a
lot of strange lines. After reboot and setting initrd and vmlinuz, I get an
error message, saying:
Kernel panic. No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel
Do I need to put something in the kernel arguments field ?
