I've been trying to install Mandrake 8.2 PPC on a pretty new G4 Mac with an
ATI Radeon vidoe card.

I select install-radeon at install time, and everything looks great (with X
running). Selecting packages and root passwords and whatnot. After I select
the bootloader stuff, I often get a busy cursor. When I cmd-ctrl-F1, I see
the following error: aewm: Xerror (0x40188f): BadWindow.

Sometimes if I kill aewm from cmd-ctrl-F2, the install comes back and asks me
if I want XFree or Xpmac. I've tried both. If I do the install in text mode,
I don't get asked for a Xpmac options. (Also, in text mode the formatting of
the network configuration is bad. Plus, the boot loader has Done and OK
buttons. OK works; Done doesn't.)

So, I've tried install-radeon, install-text, and install-video. The
install-video was way too slow to use.

Anyway, either from an install-text, I can finish an install. (It hangs up
later in the install-radeon, but seems to have done the install.) However,
when I try to start X, the screen goes black, and my monitor turns off.

The fact that I can start the X-based install indicates that it kinda works,
but under startx, it doesn't. (Also with default login.)

In the /var/log/XFree86.log, I see the following error:

RADEON(0): Cannot read V_BIOS (5)

Then it goes and grabs "default PLL parameters."

I've tried setting the option for the Device to fbdev instead of radeon, but
I get the same behavior.

What's going on? What can I check? Does anyone here have more info for me?

Thanks so much,

Frank
