Nope you shouldn't have to do that at all with pcmcia. The network card should pretty much just show up. The airport cards aren't pcmcia so they are supported more like most other network cards are under Linux. I can't help you with setting up a Linux box as an access point. I have absolutely no experience doing that. And the instructions I posted are only relevent to clients not access points.
