Well I guess it is a good thing that you see it on other apps as well. I think it has to do with putting the interface in promiscious mode, and then switching it back (to "regular" mode). Something isn't right when it gets set back.
I agree you method is more of a work-around than a solution. I found closing the lid on my PB an easier work-around. Still it would be nice to know if this is a PPC or Kernel bug. I had an older Yellowdog kernel (2.4.4 I think) which worked fine with ethereal. But then that is a different disto AND kernel version.

related to them. Then ifup the interface again. And it should start
working again.
