I suspect you chose Xpmac rather than XFree? From the testing I've done here, Xpmac seems to exclusively want to use Mac keycodes, rather than the default Linux keycodes. Your options are afaik are to either switch to XFree4, or switchover to Mac keycodes for Xpmac. I use it for my DSL, but it's setup on my router, not the Linux box.
