It appears that the problem is caused by having two ppp's installed. I still
get an error mesage with the -9 kernel in a pop-up with kppp although I am
sending this email with ppp....

I rebooted with kernel-2.2.13-9mdk and got an error message from kppp.
"This kernel has no PPP support, neither compiled in nor via the kernel module
loader. To solve this problem:
*contact your system adminstrator or
*install a kernel with PPP support"
