Tried the 5mdk. It worked fine with the 9mdk kernel until I rebooted.
I can no longer use ppp at all with either kernel or any of the ppp's
in any combination.

conf.modules:
alias tty-ldisc-3    ppp_async
alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
alias ppp0           ppp_async
alias ppp            ppp_async
