removed both
installed postfix-19990601-8mdk from my last rsync

now i get in response to a mailq as root

mailq: warning: Mail system is down -- accessing queue directly

nothing appears in /var/spool/mail/

what would the ownership of /var/spool/mail/stephen be ?
stephen.mail ?

copying root's mail in /var/spool/mail/root to 
/var/spool/mail/stephen with above ownership
gives me a new mail message in a stephen owned xterm

what puts mail into /var/spool/mail please ?
