Actually I had just done a complete re-install because upgrading from
6.1 to 7.0beta left a weirdness on my system...many minor things, many
of which have been corrected I would guess by looking at the changelogs.
When I had gdm working before it was on 6.1 with the non-mandrake rpm.
In regards to your question /tmp must have already been cleared because
I didn't find the log there. So I reinstalled the rpm with the --force
option and tried running gdm again....mysteriously it worked. Thanks for
