Hi!
I'm a firsttime Mandrake user. I've been using RedHat since 4.2, and I
thougt it was time to try something different. So I tried to install
Oxygen on my laptop. I'll try not to repeat things from earlier mails.
Installation program:
Nice installation program, but I thougt the GTK-theme looked a little
unprofessional and confusing. The colors and pixmaps should be more
consistent, and the same as the logo-background....
Selecting individual packages:
I must confess that I didn't understand much of what to do here, and the
lack of a "back" button made it even scarrier.
After experimenting with it for a while I sortof got the understanding
that marking a package selected it for installation. Unmarking unselected
that package and all packages depending on this package. OK, when I
understood this it got easier, but how can I find information about a
package marked for installation without unmarking it?
The list window is also very buggy. Sometimes it won't refresh correctly.
I think this happens when I expand a node in the tree.
My idea of a package selector would be a tree of groups with all the
individual packages represented by checkboxes. Don't know if this is
possible in GTK...
Network configuration:
I installed Oxygen on a laptop with a PCMCIA card. Earlier in the
installation I got a question asking if I wanted to search for PCI
adapters, and then another asking the same question for PCMCIA.
When I wanted to search for a network card the only question was for PCI,
I got very confused by this, and chose cancel. This was a mistake,
because no PCMCIA adapters was in this list. I fixed it by going back and
scan for PCI cards. It found my PCMCIA card. This dialog should
ask: "Search for PCI/PCMCIA cards?" instead of just PCI.
Crypto packages:
This didn't work because the network configuration didn't initialize
things correctly. I got these messages in one of the tty's:
+ Can't open /var/run/pcmcia-scheme (Does not exist)
+ ./network: /sbin/ifconfig: not found
+ sed: not found
Sound configuration:
Nonexistant... This is one of the things allways pointed out in
distribution reviews.
I tried to configure the soundcard in Lothar. It's a OPL3/SA2 card (I
know it sux). It was detected as a SoundBlaster compatible. This didn't
work. I got a "Resouce bussy" error. I tried configuring it as a opl3sax
card, but I got an insmod error saying something about "dma16 does not
exist". Configuring things in sndconfig worked fine.
I think this distribution has the potential of being one of the best.
Is there a shipdate for 7.0?
Yours sincerely!
