My system is:
Dell Inspiron 7500 (cel-466, 192m/18g, ATI Rage Pro/Mobility 8m,
1400x1050)
In order from the installation progress (I did both an upgrade then a
clean install, in fact i'm still debugging 7.0 as i type here....after the
install I havn't run into any problems tho =)
When running the upgrade, I picked Expert/Server then upgrade, and wasn't
asked which packages to upgrade. This caused my custom-built XF86-3.3.5
with ttf/Rage P/M support to be deleted, no big deal since I had it backed
up before starting....but since the help says you'll be given a list of
packages to upgrade in expert mode, it may be a good idea to do so.
When it got to "install bootloader" from the upgrade I got errors about it
not being able to find the kernel package. This was because the kernel
packages wasn't installed (this was my fault for upgrading the kernel and
using rm instead of rpm -uv to remove the old kernel) The lilo
installation continued, however and I ended up with a bootable system
(minus supermount support) with my 2.3.36 kernel.
I selected the "high" security setting, and all the bin/sbin dirs were
chmod'ed 711 ... would 751 with group root or adm make more sense here?
The network setup commented out the existing entries from
/etc/resolv.conf, even tho I selected "keep my network configuration"...my
feeling is the resolver/network config shouldn't be touched at all if the
install is told to keep the existing settings. Easy fix again, but could
be very confusing for newbies.
PCMCIA was not activated after the upgrade, and had been turned on before
the upgrade.
The following things affect both upgrades and installs:
PCMCIA is an old version, which doesnt support the 3c575 well. Since this
is the most common nic to come with new systems these days, it would be a
good idea to put at least version 3.1.8 of pcmcia-cs on the image. This
will prevent people like my from having to a) restore the source or b)
download the ~1m source tarball from sourceforge using a modem.
There is also a patch for XFree-3.3.5 that supports the Rage Mobility/Pro
and other variants. This will allow a real X setup with many laptops that
don't use the newmagic chipset (right now fbdev is the only thing the
default install will give me) A patch for xfree is located at
http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~steveh/inspiron/xserver.html .. does nothing
but let the XF86_Mach64 server "see" the Rage/PM.
My apologies if this message went to the list already...there were some
problems with the network between here and the list site.
