I have used conv=auto and not. It does not occur under defaults but
only when I make a vfat writable to an ordinary user. In fact there
are four lines in the .directory file which all have blank values
(Ron Stodden reported the lines)

Sheesh--Now this is curious--I tried to reproduce the error on another
system 6.1 ONE difference--multilanguage support installed

Now the .directory file contains the names of "Template" in many
languages and there is NO freeze

set conv=auto explicitly--NO freeze

copied ~/.licq folder over and it refused to send one special file and
copied the rest
NO freeze

No wonder you cannot easily reproduce it.
