If it's an IDE cd-rw then you might just want to skip the CD-writing howto.
I found it to scsi-specific. You'll need to recompile your kernel with the
following options:
 - Include generic SCSI support
 - Include SCSI CD support
 - Include SCSI emulation support
 - Exclude IDE CD support

Your system will see the cd-rw as a scsi device (thanks to scsi
emulation). If you include the IDE CD support in the kernel
then the kernel will try to see it as an IDE device no matter
what other options you choose. You then will not be able to
 write anything.

I have used xcdroast to write CDs and it's pretty good.
I was tring everything on the CD-writing HOWTO then, recompiled
with the above settings and re-booted then it found the cd-r no problem.
BTW - Mine is a Mitsumi 2x6 (very similar to yours).

 Mike
