Use ssh2 if you are able.
sftp works in sync with ssh2 and 
you must be root or su to run it.
Works well for me. A little slow over
modem connection due to 102x bit encryption
but what the heck. Cable modem or lan isnt bad.

I am able to use ssh2 for remote Xserver Display
which slows things down a bit but gives decent
security. (I am assuming)
Someone correct me if I am wrong.
