The problem lies in a few areas. Mostly in the fact that even though
the athlon is a good cpu the motherboards use a chipset that is at best
rough around the edges. This leads to problems. Most of which cause
instability on some operating systems and no two motherboards seem to
react the exact same way.
I've had two fic sd-11 and one msi in my shop to test and the sd-11
wouldn't set up linux but they had no problems with win 98. I've also
been told that windows 2000 doesn't like them either. The msi would use
Mandrake 7.0, windows 2000 (somewhat broken) but wouldn't use win 98.
The brand of motherboard doesn't seem to have much to do with this. Like
I said it is mostly due to the chipsets being used on the motherboards.
This is due to change however for in a few months most of the athlon
motherboards should be using new chipsets from via which supports allot
of new features. These motherboards also takes better advantage of the
athlons superior cpu design. the end results are much faster bench marks
and there should also be increased stability.
