Has anybody else had a system corruption while updating to the mirros
last weekend?

Suddently "autorpm" stopped, and then anything on the path would not
execute, with message "no such file or directory"

Curiously the "tab completion" worked, and showed the files existed
(since "ls" didn't work anymore). As another curiosity, the "rpm"
command still worked, but showed weird results. Fearing and rpm db
corruption, I issued an "rpm --rebuilddb". It finished fine, but didn;t
fixed anything.

Thinking there may have been some discrepancies from the running kernel
and some installed libraries or modules, I decided to reboot (was a
mistake, but I also needed to physicaly move the system, so ...), and
guess what? the "shutdown" or "init" or "halt" commands didn't work
either, so I pushed the deadly button ...

When it rebooted, I got a kernel panic since it could not find "init". I
haven't yet booted with a floppy (to busy) to find out more.

Does anyone have any idea of what could have happened here?
