It would help if you specified which gnome you are using. I'm assuming
you're using the 1.1.x versions so therefore I would recommend you do a
'rm -fr .gnome*' to clear out all your GNOME settings. You will have to
redecorate your panels and such, but at least it _should_ fix your
problem.
