Hi, ( Sorry for my english)
I downloaded hydrogen-inst.iso from free.ftp.fr this morning ( In
Montreal, Quebec - I was lucky to get 150 kb/s bandwidth ).
---> I previously read here that the XFree 4.0 was OK and it worked
gracefully with the 3fdx Voodoo3 cards.
I only used the install CD. I didn't get the extention iso.
I hope that the problems below are not because there are some core files
spreaded into the extention ISO image...
In X configuration step, the install stopped after this point : testing
the configuration.
Problems: ( Mandrake 7.02 was OK for all below )
- Unable to set the video mode to 1600x1200
- 3dfx server .rpm file not found. ( only needed by XFree 3.3.6 ? )
- Unable to setup XFree 4.0 ( Obviously, even XFree 3.3.6 wont (I say
- during setup )
- Had to make a cold reboot because the installation (crashed?)
stopped ( blank screen for ever ...)
Actually XFree 3.3.6 is right now installed and running
After I rebooted from the crashed installation, I ran XFDrake, selected
1280x1024 resolution.
>From KDE|DrakConf|Change video mode, I was able to set the resolution at
1600x1200 and test without problems.
If the file << hydrogen-inst.iso >> @ ftp.free.fr is corrupted or if it
is an old file, then I wish somebody to
tell me where I can get a fresh iso image. ( linux.tucows.com is too
much slow and breaks the connection regularly ( timeout...) )
Or, I would somebody to tell me where I could get the whole 7.1b latest
files, to be able build the iso by myself, then be able to
get XFree 4.0 working etc...
Thus, I could continue to explore this new distrib and NOT to report old
bug stuff :)
If you want me to record the error messages because that iso image is
the current version, then please ask me.
I will restart the installation and note the error messages.
Network: ( my connection is cablemodem on eth0 , using dhcp client)
Something is missing in the netstart scripts.
( I wont tell what since is it is just a misplaced/absent command to set
the HOSTNAME variable...)
Usually, the hostname variable is set after dhcpcd gets its IP addr.
The hostname stays as "localhost" at the login prompt.
But < ifconfig > reports eth0 up and OK.
Maybe this little problem has already been addressed and fixed (?).
Mouse:
I don't think the mouse's problem is the Mandrake (6.1, 7.02, 7.1b)
distribution, but I would want some hints about below:
I have an optical Microsoft explorer mouse (USB, 5 buttons ) I have to
plug it into the PS/2 port ( using the adapter (...) ) because it is not
detected/activated at all if plugged in the USB port.
( usbmouse driver doesn't work for that mouse )
Is that mouse too new ?
- Unable to detect at least the third button ( the wheel button ).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you very much for your help and for your work.
J'ai rellement hte que cette nouvelle version de Mandrake soit
complte!
L'installation a vraiment t amliore. J'utilise Mandrake depuis la
version 6.0 et je puis
vous dire que selon moi ( et beaucoups d'autres... ) vous faites la
meilleurs des distributions.
Et dire que Mosfet ( KDE2 ) travail pour Mandrake... Yeah!
Flicitations
