BTW: is this list the right place to post general post-installation 
configuration issues?
for example: the modem doesn't work straight out of the box. It works if 
you use kppp, but gnome-ppp which launches pppd as a user doesn't. from 
/var/log/messages it seems my /dev/modem link doesn't have correct rights.
there are lots and lots of small details like that .. this is the last 
thing bugging me about linux .. everything "nearly" works.
