My answer was not extensive, excuse my non-full knowledge of KDE :-( :
The progs need also the corresponding entries in /usr/share/mimetype/
In the 7.1 we have a problem [which will be solved in next release only
I'm afraid] : these mimetypes are not always provided by kdebase but
sometimes by the apps themselves ; for example *.mp3 won't work properly
with xmms if kmp3 is not installed, even if the menu entry of xmms have
the kde mimetypes, because these mimetypes will not be known by KDE unless
kmp3 installs them.
We need to rework a lot of packages to clean up these mimetypes,
extensively listing all the mimetypes possible, to include them all in
package kdebase.

You would need the package "menu" and packages for the software: kpackage,
aktion, etc.
I just made the test with the cooker, clicking on a .mp3 launches kmp3
just fine.
Clicking on a RPM is fine, also..
I don't have a .avi under hands to test but apparently it also provides
the mimetypes and have them in the menu entry, it should work.
I suspect your problem was coming from absent corresponding mimetypes in
/usr/share/mimelnk as I explained.
