Thanks for your input David, that's what I was looking for as far as
fixing the problem.  I would say however, this shouldn't have to be done
for every file every time you load this system on a new computer -
should it? (I use several different computers.)  I don't remember ever
having to do it before, at least not for commonly used programs.  Maybe
if I had an .xyz file in my directory and wanted it to open with some
home written program, then I would expect that - but an .rpm file?  An
.mp3 file?  Since the kmp3 icon gets stamped on the .mp3 file by
default, why not also associate the program by default?  Then if someone
wanted to change from say kmp3 to xmms being there default, you could
point them to that very helpful kfm howto.
