you need a sequencer :-)
it is a device that all soundcards do not support, presumeably the i810
[or its driver is limited] does not support it.
i'm maybe wrong, but i figure out the /dev/sequencer as a "hardware mixing
device", and limited cards [as Sound Blaster 1/2/16 for example] do not
have it, whereas better soundcards [as SoundBlaster AWE or Gravis
Ultrasound] have.

It can play back midi files on general midi devices or FM or Gravis
Ultrasound.
