I checked too and I have also a very drastic performance problem with
mencoder, encoding a video or TV, or encoding sound in oggvorbis. (about 4
times slower).
This happens with the NON smp kernel, and this is even worse with the
multimedia kernel (NON smp).

Have you sent the bug to Bugzilla ? I'll vote for it.
