Till,

About parallel:
Parallel printing works fine (I tried about 7 print jobs, with various
printout modes and quality settings).
I notice that printing starts very quickly, much quicker than with USB.
(Printer still stalls for a while between lines after first half of page is
printed, particularly if the printout mode is high quality. Seems unrelated
to USB print problem)

BTW I'm happy my printer still sports a parallel port!

Answers to your USB questions:
I always have the printer connected through a short USB cable directly
to the computer (no convertors, no PCI cards, using one of the two
USB ports on my DELL Dimension XPS D233).

Another thing that may be related.
I noticed that in Cooker my USB printer never switches on automatically,
but it did that in Mandrake 9.0. So something changed somewhere...

Now I did some experiments with USB printing.
As you suggested I changed the line in my /etc/modules.conf from
probeall usb-interface usb-uhci
to probeall usb-interface uhci
and rebooted.

At first try USB printing does not work. Job 29 goes to state processing
and the printer never does anything.
I switched the printer off and on three times.
Then I removed the job with the printer tray applet.
Then I tried to print again (job 30)
This worked.

Then I tried to print a very long job (this email with attachment).
I used the dialog box to stop the generation of pages at about page 45.
The job started to print.
I removed it using kprinter tray and aborted at the printer.
After switching printer on I could not print anymore.
Print job 32 gets stuck at processing.
After a few minutes I cancelled it.
Also the next CUPS job (33) never leaves state processing.
I cancelled it.

The next job (34) I tried printing through the parallel port.
This still works!
My problems definitely seem USB-related, as you said!
It seems pretty easy to confuse the system when using USB...

Then I continued with the rest of you suggestions,

This program manages devices controlled by the HP OfficeJet Linux
driver (hpoj). It attempts to probe your computer for local parallel-
and USB-connected devices, and allows you to specify network addresses
for remote JetDirect-connected devices.

If you experience any difficulties in detecting your device(s), then
refer to the hpoj documentation for troubleshooting information.

Hmm, I have a 970 Cxi, not a 970Cse. Is this a problem?
Perhaps the printer is driven not entirely correct through USB?

When I print to DeskJetprinter (listed as a raw device in the printer dialog)
nothing happens.
The information box (with the cancel button) pops up and shows pages
being generated and sent to the printer.
No kprinter pops up in tray and no printer activity.

After a few minutes I copied the error_log and attached it to this email...

Conclusions:
- problem definitely seems related to USB
- Your suggestion of changing the line in modules.conf did not work.
USB printing is exactly as flaky as before.
- parallel printing works even if USB printing does not work anymore.
- apparently I was not able to properly setup the office jet driver?

Good luck!

John

description:
I have a serious printer problem (*) which I cannot investigate because
for me CUPS does not work at all in KDE :-\

Cooker freshly installed on a newly formatted partition, on Monday evening
March 9.

Printer is a HP Deskjet 970 Cxi, installed during the installation proces
with the (recommended) hpij drivers.
I'm using a DELL dimension XPS D233 (Pentium II 233) with 224 MB RAM.

Test page prints OK during the installation process except for the problem
mentioned at (*) which I was trying to investigate in the first place.

First observation: I notice that CUPS is not configured in KDE as the default
printing system. Instead the default is "Generic UNIX LPD Print System".
Is this intentional? I thought we were switching to CUPS?
Perhaps I made an error in the installation process somewhere...

Second observation.
I try to print something with the default printing system.
It works(*).
I switch to CUPS to try and print something.
It works (*)
I try to print again, with 2 pages per sheet.
Now the application crashes immediately.

>From this point on, any application I am in crashes instantly
when I select CUPS _and_ select the HP Deskjet printer.
Also the control panel (Peripherals-Printers) crashes when
I make these selections.

I switched the debug level of cupsd to debug2, restarted
cupsd, and (in a konqueror print dialog) selected
CUPS as printing system in combination with my Deskjet printer.
It crashed and produced the attached /var/log/cups/error_log

I'm competely at a loss what to do next.
Could it have anything to do with the fact that I accidentally
named my server DELL and it cannot find it in the /etc/hosts?

Please advice on possible log files or whatever that you want me
to include.

(*) Apart from the above-described CUPS problem I am experiencing
the following printing problem.
It seems to be unrelated to the CUPS problem because it was ALWAYS for
me like this during the last two months using Cooker.
The problem is described as follows:
I print a couple of pages with simple text, does not matter from which
application in KDE.
Printer is configured in draft mode.
First page starts very fast.
At half of page printing slows done with pauses between the lines.

Sometimes the printing stops completely at the half of the first page.
Middel LED of printer starts to flash orange.
According to printer manual this means printer is waiting for data.
Data does not come (I waited for 10 minutes or so)

Sometimes the printer manages to finish the pages very very slowly.
Changing the hpij drivers to eg the GIMPprint ones does not help.
They print even slower...
