           Product: XFree86
         Component: XFree86
           Summary: NVIDIA driver size problem
           Version: 4.3-5mdk
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
        AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
        ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Configuration:

Toshiba 5205-S703 laptop, 1600x1200 lcd monitor

Video Card: NV17M GeForce4 460 Go

The "generic" GeForce4 driver that comes with XFree86 gives me odd sizing
effects:

Normally (i.e. with Mandrake 9.0 or if I compile the driver from the NVIDIA
download site), if I choose a "generic" lcd monitor and display of 1600x1200
in, say, XFdrake, and then run X, I get a full display with tiny, tiny icons
and fonts. My middle-aged eyes have problems with that, so I normally choose
around 1200x1024 or something like that, which provides bigger icons and text.

However, with this installation, choosing a smaller display just puts up
a smaller desktop on the screen. Instead of having bigger icons and text,
I have the same small icons and text as if I had chosen a resolution of
1600x1200, but just in a desktop that takes up 60% or 80% of the screen size.
No combination of monitor size or display resolution choices could give me the
display I was used to.

This is fixed by re-compiling and installing the NVIDIA driver downloaded from
NVIDIA.
