Ati.2 was put into contribs to give SOME support to ATI cards for Xv. This was
established when it was found to break 3D accelleration for other cards when it was
compiled as a patch for XFree86. It was never intended to provide DRI in its present
form. Due to the release date of 9.1 final, there was not time to package drm-kernel,
km and other parts of the gatos project. The description provided states that the
drivers are EXPERIMENTAL and I would sincerely hope that users take that into account.
I am presently working towards getting the rest of the gatos project into contribs but
it will be POST 9.1 final.

After I upgraded to the most recent cooker I lost 3d acceleration, so I went hunting
in
the usual places to find the culprit. Lo and behold, my XFree86.0.log states that the
DRI module, radeon.o is too old and refuses to start.

The version of the radeon.o is 1.7.0, whereas the X server tells me that it wants
1.100.0 or greater.
