I updated with cooker and ran XFDrake and did a test. This time I got a test pattern.
Not really a good test since I didn't reinstall Mandrake from CD's.

During resolution setup, I clicked test button. I received a gray screen with a dialog
box asking me whether it was ok. No tux image appeared. Clicked Ok and continued
installation.
