I assume you've tried all the modes available to you? From
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/vesafb.txt:
So the table for the Kernel mode numbers are:

16M | 0x312 0x315 0x318 0x31B
If you have difficulty converting between hex and decimal, use kcalc or
xcalc to do the conversion for you. However, do know that decimal 788
is hex 0x314. You can start from there and do some simple math to
figure out what's what.
